Press release: JOZI Youth Dance Company is the first company of its kind. Situated in Parkview, Johannesburg, this brand new company’s aim is to create professional level productions and dancers and to be recognised nationally. The mission being to build dancers’ careers from a young age. The company does various dance styles and celebrates the talents of local choreographers and artists. Jayd Swart, founder and director of JOZI Youth Dance Company, felt that the level of dance of the South African youth is too high to go unnoticed and decided that there is a gap in the market for a semi-professional company highlighting the youth.
Without any financial backing the company stands as a family and backs itself. With the help of the members JYDC makes its debut performance: “écouter” at the Roodepoort Theatre on 23, 24 and 25 April 2015.Dancers from all over Gauteng auditioned to be a part of this new, exciting endeavour and the response has been astronomical. Word spread like wild fire and out of all the audition candidates, 40 dancers were chosen. Four professional choreographers choreographed for the company and its guest dancers from Tshwane University of Technology, to produce JYDC’s debut season.
The level of the dancers is incredibly high, and the professional choreographers bring a flair to the company. The company’s main goal is to create a stepping stone for dancers into big dance companies around the country and world by allowing them the opportunity to expose their talents to a broader audience. JYDC also hopes to lift the level of dance in young dancers of South Africa even more and create awareness about this beautiful art form in this country.
The company prides itself on giving South African choreographers a platform to show their work and growing the art form. Choreographers include: Phume Sikhakhane, Lesley Angove, Jayd Swart and Nikki Jacobs. Now the company stands together and dances like never before in the hopes of producing an exquisite season that ensures that it keeps running for many more decades. Auditions for the 2016 Season are scheduled for June/July 2015 and Choreographers are lined up.
JOZI Youth Dance Company is on a roll and ready to show the country what they are made of.
